7 reasons you can't share the ride, and why you really can!

1. I have a complicated schedule. Consider carpooling or vanpooling just one day a week to begin with. Or, try carpooling on an "as available" basis; a quick phone call the evening before is all that is needed.
2. I can only carpool (or vanpool) one or two days a week. Carpooling just one day a week has significant impact on your fuel consumption and on your pocketbook. Visit our cost of commute page to find out what you could save.
3. I need to have a car during the day. Not everyone has this constraint; you can still offer someone else a ride. You and your passenger can work out a mutually agreeable payment to help defray your costs.
4. My schedule changes every semester. All it takes is one quick email inquiry to find out if you can be matched for a carpool during any given semester. Then you get to enjoy all the benefits all semester long.
5. I have to drop off and pick up my kids at daycare. Simply request a carpool match from your daycare rather than your house (provided your daycare can accommodate your car).
6. I have to unexpectedly stay late on occasion. All participants in USM carpools or vanpools are eligible for our Emergency Ride Home Guarantee*.
7. I am a student/teacher with late classes. For obvious reasons it is difficult to find other people driving home at late hours. One approach, which works well for some folks, is to ask around in your late classes for someone who can give you a ride home (or to a Park & Ride lot near your home where you have left your car). Then send us an email and we can match you with a regular commuter in the morning.

Other reasons? Let us know! We may be able to figure out a way around them.
