Aramark

USM Dining, run by Aramark, is now regularly offering local and organic produce.

Composting in Gorham
The Gorham campus dining services are now collecting compostable materials and composting them at a local farm.
Paper:
In 2002, University Computing instituted pay-per-page printing. After the change, each printed side now cost students $.04 per page. The primary purpose of this initiative was to reduce uneccesary printing. Indeed, the volume of paper used in university computer labs dropped dramatically.

USM has also been looking into duplexing printers for some applications.

Environmental Literacy Awards
Professor Emeritus of History Fred Padula, who taught at USM for 27 years and Specialized in Latin American history, has generously funded two awards for environmental literacy. Calls for entries commenced in the fall of 2002, and winners are being announced during 2003. Sponsored by the USM Environmental and Economic Sustainability Committee, there were three Student Awards for Environmental Literacy of $1,000 each for winners of a student essay contest. The topic of the 1,000-1,200 word essay was how the USM community could use energy, or material resources, more sustainably.

The Committee also awarded three awards to faculty members for promoting environmental literacy by creating or modifying a course during the 2002-03 academic year.
