USM Clean Lights

On the initiative of Dudley Greeley, coordinator of environmental and economic sustainability in Facilities Management, USM has instituted the CleanLights Program. This program encourages the replacement of old incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs. Greeley reports that the thousand bulbs recently purchased and distributed on campus will save over $40,000 in electricity costs and an additional $30,000 or so in bulb replacement costs. Because these bulbs use less energy, the bulbs contribute to reductions in power plant emissions; because they are replaced less frequently, they require less landfill space.
