The University of Southern Maine's Office of Economic and Environmental Sustainability was created in the fall of 2002. The mission of our office is to help move USM toward more sustainable practices. In this context, sustainability is defined as the ability of current generations to meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It is an ambitious goal, with profound implications for all aspects of the university: how it operates, what it teaches, and how it interacts with the local and global communities.
