RSP 340 (6 Credits)

This summer, explore the "Cultural Landscape of Greece!" In this course led by Mary Snell and Irwin Novak, you will be introduced to the multi-faceted nature of this intriguing country - much more than just the site of ruins like the well-known Parthenon. Although ancient Greece is the birthplace of our western civilization, Greece today is also a modern, emerging European nation. Already a major tourist destination, it was in the spotlight in the summer of 2004 when Athens hosted the Olympic Games.

You will travel to the bustling capital of Athens for a few days, but spend most of your time on the quieter island of Lesvos. Here, you will live in the small city of Mytilene (now a Sister City with Portland, Maine) where you will be near markets, shops and cafes. The group will gather daily to take field trips all over the island to villages, ancient sites, archeological and art museums, and beaches. You can share meals with the group in the pensione or in seaside or city cafés.

In class, you will learn about the physical and societal framework of the culture through lectures on human geography, geology, cultural traditions, current forces of change, the impact of tourism, environmental issues, and regional politics. The lectures will be given by faculty from USM, the University of the Aegean, and other professionals. In this writing intensive class, you will be expected to complete daily assignments, keep daily journals and make other visual records of your experiences. There will be two exams and a final project. Beyond the academic credit earned and knowledge learned, you will take away lasting memories and friendships, forged in the dazzling light and warmth of the people you will meet.
