MBA 612 (3 Credits)
This international business program is an exciting opportunity for MBA students to develop a more global perspective by visiting businesses in France. Students will experience French business practices firsthand, learning how the French set business goals, develop strategic plans, and measure their achievement of these goals. Students will also gain an understanding of the impact of French culture, politics and government policies on businesses within France. More specifically, we will study how unions, the 35–hour work week, and the ease of hiring and firing employees impacts French business practices.
As part of the program, students will prepare for the trip by completing reading assignments on French business and management practices, the European Union, the Euro, and the French position in both. There will also be two three-hour briefings on France and issues specific to industries we will visit. These briefings will be held on two Saturdays prior to our travels.
Once in France, students will attend lectures on-site and visit various businesses in Angers such as those in electronics, transportation, and wine. We will spend a full day visiting the Bull Electronics computer plant in Angers and be introduced to its mission, strategy, and competitive issues. On this particular site visit, we will also discuss of the impact of unions and the government on French business. If our schedule permits, we will visit businesses in Le Mans as well. Students will have the opportunity to learn more about Angers and its rich culture by sharing dinner with a local family and touring its castle and old section. The program will culminate with a day to explore Paris and its magical sites.
