Rissho Roommate Program: Japanese Language and Culture

USM is excited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Rissho Roommate Program. Every August, USM has hosted students from Rissho University in Tokyo, Japan. The Japanese students spend three weeks taking courses in English language and American culture and live in a residence hall with American roommates. On weekends, the Japanese students stay with host families from the greater Portland area. Perhaps the most powerful experience for the Japanese students are the friendships they develop with their American roommates.

The Rissho Roommate Program looks to place American students with a Japanese students during this three week English immersion program. Throughout the program, the roommates participate in extracurricular activities and field trips, and spend free time with each other. The benefits for the American students are:

  • The opportunity to experience a foreign culture and make lasting friendships.
  • Free room at the Maine College of Art's (MECA) 51 Oak Street Dormitory during the program.
  • Breakfast and lunch on weekdays and some dinners
  • Field trips and activities with their roommates including a day trip to Boston.
