Certificate Program

Non-Credit - in its 7th Year!

The noncredit option is designed for teachers/directors who plan to utilize the Michael Chekhov techniques in the classroom or for rehearsal. It offers participants extensive training in the acting techniques of Michael Chekhov and provides opportunity and feedback for teaching these techniques.

Graduate Credit - in its 5th Year!

The graduate credit option offers participants certification to teach Michael Chekhov's techniques and earn graduate credits. Candidates for this program must hold a minimum of a B.A. or B.F.A. in theatre or professional equivalency. A complete application with official transcripts is required, along with a non-refundable $15 application fee. Final approval into the program must be granted by the Graduate Admissions office.

The certificate programs require the completion of two summer Institutes at the University of Southern Maine, plus a final independent project (total of 9 credits for the Graduate Certificate). The independent project must have the prior approval of the instructors and may consist of application of the techniques to a stage performance, as a director, or as a teacher.

All certificate candidates must hold a minimum of a B.A. or B.F.A. in theatre or professional equivalency, as determined by the instructors. This is essential for the graduate certificate, and will require documentation via transcripts. Teaching and directing experience will also be considered. Application for either certificate program requires a non-refundable $15 application fee.

The certificate programs are administered by the University of Southern Maine in conjunction with the National Michael Chekhov Association of Los Angeles and the executrix of Michael Chekhov's estate.
