July 20 - 25, 2008
Composing Together* is a way to build a community of composers through the use of listening, performing, creating, and critiquing activities in school-based settings. Created in the United States by Michele Kaschub and Janice P. Smith, the program emphasizes the development of teacher-composers who are able facilitators of children's compositional work.
The Composing Together Program* is the only certificate of graduate study in teaching music composition Pre K-12 offered in the United States. Bringing professional educators and composers together, the unique nine-credit program sets the stage for engaging children in music composition in classrooms, private and group lessons, computer laboratories, and rehearsal halls. The certificate program requires the completion of
Composing Together Levels I, II, and III, which may stand alone or constitute a sub-concentration within the Master of Music degree program at USM.
*Application to this program is required.
Composing Together Level I

Coursework will include instruction in compositional techniques and teaching skills. Small group interactions and guided microteaching opportunities will be key elements in the program. Participants will have individual lessons with professional composers to develop their own compositional abilities as they learn to teach composition to children.
