Cathy Alexander cathy.alexander@maine.edu Orrs Island, ME Nursing
APA PLACEMENT: School of Nursing
Why you applied to APA: I chose to become involved in the Academic Peer Advising program because it appealed to me for developing leadership skills. I also viewed it as an opportunity to become more involved with the Nursing program in order to connect with other students and faculty in ways I would not otherwise have done.
What one thing did you get out of the program: I have discovered how much
I truly enjoy working with students, staff and faculty in order to support my peers in Nursing whether by tutoring, by providing more direct advising support, or in delivering presentations to students contemplating transferring into Nursing from other schools or programs. It's a great feeling to share the knowledge and wisdom I've gained during my time at USM and to be a resource to other students.

Suncook, NH
Criminology
APA Placement: Criminology Department
Why you applied to APA: I wanted to give other criminology majors a student perspective that I didn't have when I first entered the major. I wanted to help my peers any way I could and ultimately help them reach their goals.
One thing I got out of APA: Peer advising has helped me think independently and reflect on my own decisions I have made within my major. I have taken those decisions and used them to guide my peers in the right direction.

Exercise Physiology
APA PLACEMENT:Exercise, Health, and Sport Sciences Department
Why you applied to APA: To help motivate and guide other students in pursuit of their undergraduate degree.
What one thing did you get out of the program: I have come to learn there are not only varied types of students, but also varied approaches those students take to achieve their educational goals. No two students will be the same and despite different opinions or backgrounds we are all in pursuit of the same goal of gaining a 4 year degree at the University of Southern Maine. Therefore it is very important to respect each individual’s perspective, and try to fully understand their concerns in order to best help them.
