Media Training Day-Presented by the Free Press
The Free Press wants you to try your hand at breaking the news. Join us for a
day when we stage a mock emergency on campus this April and cover the news
with us.
No experience is necessary for participation. This will be a chance for
students to learn new skills in a hands-on way. The goal is that students,
along with The Free Press staff, practice the skills necessary for getting
the news out under pressure.
The event will be free and open to all students. USM, local high school and
neighboring college students are encouraged to register.
Here’s how it will work: groups of the student journalists will gather in
the “newsroom,” and a call will come in. There will be an emergency on
campus, and they will have a relatively short period of time in which they
can interview, report, and take pictures and video.
Don't have any experience? Don't worry. We'll be there to help.
In the end, there will be a constructive critique in which a panel of local
media professionals will talk about each group’s work and select a
winner. The winning group will receive a prize, courtesy of The Free Press.
Make the most of your time at USM!
