Financial Aid and Scholarship The financial aid and billing process is very complex, and we understand that it can be confusing and frustrating at times. We hope the following information will help answer some of the questions you may have about financial aid and billing. Financial Aid Due Dates:
Each winter all students (new and returning) must apply for financial aid to be awarded for the next year's terms (Summer/Fall and Winter/Spring). The priority deadline for applying for federal financial aid is February 15. For information on how to apply and where to get the financial aid application (FAFSA), please go to the USM financial aid website at: Also, when you are completing the FAFSA form, be sure to check off that you will be attending full time. Your Financial Aid Award in Relation to Direct Program costs:
Your financial aid award is based on the following components: direct program costs (tuition, fees, and room & board, if applicable), plus estimated costs for transportation, housing, books, and miscellaneous expenses. All these components are added together to provide a budget for the financial aid office to work with as they determine your award. For example, for financial aid purposes these components for a typical student enrolled in the MFA program for the summer/fall/spring of 2002/2003 were calculated in excess of $19,000.00. However, your bill for the MFA program will be based only on direct program costs, not on the indirect components. Once the financial aid office receives your FAFSA information, you will be sent an award letter indicating what aid eligibility you will have for the year including the breakdown for summer, fall and spring semesters.
