Fiction at Stonecoast
In an era when many graduate programs are accused of turning out cookie-cutter graduates who have been taught to write the "workshop story," Stonecoast bucks that trend by encouraging fiction of all forms and sub-genres. The work of Stonecoast faculty represents a wide range of styles of fiction, from the strongly plotted to the lyrically experimental, the classic to the quirky, the comic to the erotic, the emotionally moving to the politically activist—and many intersections and overlappings in between. Fiction at Stonecoast is uniquely enriched by proximity with one of the nation's only graduate programs in popular fiction writing. Lively conversations about the interface between literary and popular fiction lead to increased awareness of the unique roles of literary fiction, as well as fostering questions of audience and a continual exercise of the imaginative possibilities of multiple genres of literature. And our faculty and students not only approach their work in diverse ways; they respect each others’ variety of approaches. To a person, our fiction faculty are all not only well-published and publishing authors, but also wonderful and supportive teachers, mentors, and colleagues. Their wisdom and encouragement help to foster a true writing community. Stonecoast fiction faculty bring to their students a wide range of experience, from scholarship in literary theory, to university pedagogy, to editing presses and magazines, to the strategies of a self-supporting author (several Stonecoast faculty are extremely knowledgeable about the business end of being an author, from marketing and publicity to agents and book contracts). Yet fiction writers of all these different backgrounds meld together harmoniously here to help create a community of writers infused with an unusual level of mutual respect. Fiction students at Stonecoast also seem to form an unusually warm and supportive network, with many small groups springing up and creating lasting friendships.
