Doctor of Nursing Practice

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has approved that the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) be the required credential for all advance practice nurses by 2015. For more information on the DNP visit AACN's web site at http://www.aacn.nche.edu/DNP/index.htm

USM nursing faculty are currently in the second phase of program development for securing approval of the DNP. Focus groups were held in Augusta, Orono, and Portland in the fall of 2005. In addition a needs survey was conducted with baccalaureate and high degree prepared nurses in Maine in the fall of 2005.

Assuming approval by USM and the University of Maine System Board of Trustees, the 1st cohort for the DNP program will be admitted to USM in Fall 2008.
