Nursing Clinical Requirements

Formal documentation of the following requirements have been met MUST be on file with the College of Nursing and Health Professions BEFORE DEADLINE DATE. This applies to ALL Nursing majors, graduate students, and students enrolled in NUR 213 and NUR 419, and NUR 602.

  • Deadline for students enrolled in clinical classes in the fall semester is August 1
  • Deadline for students enrolled in clinical classes in the Spring is November 30
  • Deadline for students enrolled in clinical classes in the Summer is April 15

If you miss your deadline you will be dropped from your clinical classes.

IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO CONFIRM RECEIPT OF REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION. Please e-mail shaglund@usm.maine.edu or bwebster@usm.maine.edu to verify receipt of Health Requirements.

TITERS

Titers are blood tests to determine immunity to specific diseases. They are NOT IMMUNIZATIONS. All titers are required REGARDLESS of your age and/or whether you have had the immunizations. If a titer shows non-immunity you must receive a booster.

( ) Rubella
( ) Rubeola
( ) Mumps
( ) Varicella

TETANUS-DIPHTHERIA

( ) Proof of a Tetanus and Diphtheria booster immunization received within the last 10 years.

It is highly recommended that if you need to update your Tetanus Diphtheria that you get the Tetanus Diphtheria & Pertussis booster (TDAP).

HEPATITIS B SERIES & TITER*

Given in a series of three injections, followed by a titer. In the event of a negative titer, the series must be repeated.

The CDC schedule for the three injections is as follows:

  • There must be at least 4 weeks between doses one and two
  • There must be 8-12 weeks between doses two and three.
  • Overall, there must be at least 16 weeks between doses one and three.

* The titer is done 1 month following completion of the series. For those who have completed their series more than 1 year ago a titer is not required.

NOTE: Some healthcare providers do not go by the CDC schedule above. This may increase the time needed to complete the series.

TUBERCULOSIS TESTS (PPD)

Two PPD/ Purified Protein Derivative tests (intradermal injection) administered two weeks apart. If you have annual PPDs please submit your two most recent. One PPD test must be repeated annually.

CPR CERTIFICATION

( ) Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is required . Your American Red Cross Certificate must state "CPR for Professional Rescuer." Your American Heart Association Certification must state "BLS for Health Care Provider."

A card printed from an on-line certification is not acceptable.

PROOF OF HEALTH INSURANCE

( ) Please submit proof of current health insurance coverage. A copy of your card is acceptable.

If you are enrolled in Health Insurance through the University of Southern Maine, please notify shaglund@usm.maine.edu or bwebster@usm.maine.edu via E-mail. For information on insurance plan offered through the university click here.

In addition to the above requirements RN Students must provide proof of RN licensure.
