AKD News2003/2004 Has been a busy year for the SSA/AKD group and we're very excited! During the Fall semester we were part of 2 events that are new to the USM campus community. First, we had a table and representation at the Student Involvement Fair. All BSO recognized student groups were able to have informational tables set up in the Woodbury Campus Center. Food, music, and a mechanical bull were provided. Meghan Toole (Senior) and Dr Cruz both braved the mechanical bull and were able to ride for various lengths of time without injuring themselves or bystanders. Sarah Cloutier (Junior) and Myranda McGowan (Senior) sat at our table and handed out information and candy. We also participated in the first USM Craft Fair. At this event several students and faculty pitched in their homemade items in the hopes of raising money for the trip to New York City. Dr. Morrison donated homemade 'cookies in a jar,' Dr. Cruz made pen/pencil/candle holders, Sadie Perkins (Senior) made Christmas ornaments and hot cocoa mix, Lauren Wolf (Senior) made fudge, Sarah Bennett (Junior) brought reindeer candy canes, and various baked goods were donated from other faculty and students. In October we inducted new members to Alpha Kappa Delta. These students must qualify and be invited to join. Every year we induct between 20 and 40 students. Membership requirements and association information can be found at the "AKD HOME" link above. The SSA/AKD also had numerous bake sales. At each of these we were able to raffle tickets to a December game of the Boston Celtics vs the Phoenix Suns. Tickets were generously donated by the parents of an SSA/AKD member. We also were fortunate enough to have On The Border donate a dinner for 2. Winners of these raffles were: Michelle Dustin, USM Technology and Media Services (Celtics tickets) and Lauren Wolf (dinner for 2). Probably our most important event in the Fall was our trip to New York City. Dr. Cruz took 9 students to NYC for a weekend in December. While in New York, we visited Times Square, Rockefeller Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Ground Zero, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island. It was quite a memorable trip for various reasons- the weather(!), the fact that some students had never been to NYC, and because it was the first out of town trip for the SSA. We hope to make this an annual event. Plans for the Spring 2004 semester include: 1) Shirts! We will finally be getting SSA shirts with our slogan, "…creating community, maintaining solidarity, appreciating diversity…" 2) Our second annual panel presentation WHAT CAN I DO WITH A SOCIOLOGY DEGREE? We hope to have 4 different speakers than last year who can talk about what they have done with their BA in Sociology. 2) SSA/AKD/Sociology Department BBQ 3) A sledding trip to Seacoast Fun Park 4) various bake sales and fundraisers For 2003/2004 we are meeting on Thursday nights at 7pm in the Sociology Department conference room (120 Bedford, Portland). We partake in a social outing (usually dinner) the first Thursday of each month. For more information, email one of the officers, Dr. Cruz or Dr. Collom. |
