USM AKD
Sociology Honor Society
Alpha Kappa Delta, the Beta Chapter of Maine at USM began in 1974. Requirements for membership in AKD are:
1) the student should be officially declared a sociology major
2) the student should be at least a junior
3) the student should have an overall grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale) and rank in the top 35% of their class in general scholarship
4) the student should have maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average in sociology classes taken
5) the student should have completed at least 12 hours (4 classes) in sociology
What we envision for the Beta of Maine chapter is a student honor group whereby we combine the AKD values of “to study” and “to serve” so that we practice our scholarship and become involved as much as possible with not only the USM community, but the Portland and Gorham communities as well.
The Sociology Student Association began in the Fall of 2002. The mission of the Sociology Student Association is to create a community by connecting sociology students with one another, university/department faculty/staff, and Greater Portland; to maintain solidarity between students, university employees, and the surrounding public through service projects and social engagement; and to appreciate all forms of social and cultural diversity both on and off campus.
This undertaking is in accordance with the goals of the University of Southern Maine to benefit the local citizens and society in general through public service, and to encourage contributions and participation in diverse communities.
Our previous student officers were instrumental in drafting the constitution so that we could become an official Board of Student Organizations group. This means that we are able to access funds from the Student Activity Fee to partake in various trips, events, etc.
There are no formal requirements to joining the SSA- one need only be interested in the discipline and meeting other students.
The SSA and AKD are generally one in the same, so that students who have an interest in becoming part of a student group, yet do not qualify to be members of AKD, may participate.
