Going the distance

Three nautical miles, in fact. In Maine, many fishing families live on islands without regular access to health care services. Fishing is among the world's most hazardous professions. Now, thanks to students of USM's College of Nursing and Health Professions, preventive care for these fishing families is just a boat trip away. Several times a year, the students travel to Maine islands to staff free health screenings and flu shot clinics where they treat dozens of fishing families, many of them underinsured. Going the extra mile is what a USM education is all about.
