Rare books enhance University's special collections

The Albert A. Howard Book History Collection will be a resource to scholars across disciplines at USM and will further enhance the University's Special Collections, which consist of a number of unique collections important to the region, says Susie Bock, USM's head of Special Collections.

Howard, a long-time USM libraries cataloger, is donating his collection of rare books that includes a 1553 edition of the first illustrated children's book, an early printing of Henry VIII's letter to Martin Luther dated 1527, and 16th century popular poetry collections. The original materials will be useful to students and faculty in the study and teaching of the printed book as a social and cultural instrument in Europe and the Americas from 1500 to present.
