It’s for the birds—and the squirrels and the students!

In 1998, Mother Nature delivered a series of wintery blasts to USM's Gorham campus that destroyed 175 trees, many approaching 120 years in age. In a community effort, USM arborists, faculty, and others (with the support of a Maine Forest Service Grant) recaptured the historical beauty of the campus by replacing trees and restoring USM’s Arboretum. Today, the botanical teaching tool, which features a wide diversity of species, provides a fertile classroom, laboratory, and campus in which to learn, live, and enjoy—no air conditioning needed.

Now that’s turning over a new leaf.
