Planting for the future

A changing landscape is on display year around at the Arboretum on USM's historic Gorham campus.

The USM Arboretum provides fertile ground for learning and leisure by students and community members alike. The diverse landscape grew out of a community effort to recapture the historical beauty of the Gorham campus after 175 trees, many of them as old as 120 years, were lost due to the ice storm and later microburst in 1998.

Reopened in 2001, today's Arboretum symbolizes USM's commitment to increasing awareness of environmentally sustainable development. The USM Arboretum now features a diverse array of disease- and pest-resistant species that reduce the need for the use of harmful pesticides or future replacement. Walking tours and workshops offered at the Arboretum also help increase horticultural awareness within our region. Learn more about the USM Arboretum.
