Becoming
a Partner
Thank you for
your interest in becoming a community partner with LAC. First
we suggest that you browse our web site to gain a better
understanding of service-learning and what it
involves. We strive for mutually beneficial relationships.
Service
learners work in a community organization or school that relates to
their academic course content, and they generally are required to serve
a minimum of 10 to 20 hours over a ten-week period, which varies by
instructor. If you find that this level of commitment does not meet
your needs, please contact us for further discussions.
If
you would like to become a community partner with LAC, please follow
these steps:
1. Read the
complete Service-Learning Guide. Please note that LAC offers a
limited number of courses with a S-L component, so there is a
limited number of enrolled students available each semester; we
will
not be able to fill
every
request.
2. Scan the list of
Service-Learning Courses offering service-learning
components. As you read through the descriptions, please reflect on the
kinds of opportunities your organization offers and how they might
relate to any of the service-learning courses offered. Please be
advised that this list is in constant flux, and not all courses are
offered every semester.
3. If there is a course that looks like a good match with the work of
your organization contact the Coordinator of Community Partnerships
(753-6547) to express your interest in establishing a partnership. The
coordinator can help you decide which courses will be relevant to your
work and refer you to the professor. It is best to plan ahead -- for
example, contact us in April or May
for fall programs, and
contact us by September or October
for spring
courses whenever possible.
4. Before placing students at your site, we would like to conduct a tour of
your facility and discuss the process to establish accountability for
students as well as any site-specific requirements you may have.
5. Please review the S-L Agency Agreement form found in the S-L Guide.
While the agreement will work for most placements, there are
areas that may need to be more specific, or attachments
included, for complete understanding with a specific organization.
Please note: This information is intended for use with service-learning
placements,
and
may not cover all the specifics that are required for other types of
experiential education, such as an internship.
While parts of the
S-L Agency Agreement are adaptable for each service learning
placement, any amendments and changes must be discussed and amended
with the course instructor.
