Masters in Leadership Student Project |

African History Series L-A College graduate student, Ismail Ahmed, created an education series inspired by the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. It began during Black History Month in February, and was completed in April, 2004. This project was not required through his coursework but he used many skills he acquired from it to make it such a success. When you first meet Ismail Ahmed, you can’t help but to smile. His friendly nature has made stopping by room 169, where the International Students’ Organization of Lewiston-Auburn (ISOLA) is found, part of many peoples’ routine. When asked why he decided to make these presentations, he laughs, saying “everyone is always asking me about Africa. They are curious about the continent and the people.” He thought perhaps this would be an effective way to reach more people, while at the same time expanding his leadership studies from the classroom into the real world to benefit the community. Beginning in February, Ahmed held talks and discussions about African history, geography, colonialism, and religion. The highlight of his project was an evening of great African food and entertainment, as well as a filmstrip history of the mbira instrument of Zimbabwe that explained its importance during that country's fight for independence.
