Becker/Conviser CPA Review Scholarship
The recipient is a first-year accounting major who has exhibited outstanding performance in introductory accounting. The accounting faculty selects the recipient.
Beta Gamma Sigma Scholarship
Beta Gamma Sigma is the international honor society for the highest achieving students majoring in business or accounting at AACSB-International accredited business schools. AACSB-International is the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, which accredits the top-echelon business schools around the world. BGS and the School of Business dean jointly sponsor this scholarship, established in 2001 at USM.
Burchard Dunn Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1997 in memory of Burchard Dunn, a founding partner in Berry, Dunn, McNeil, & Parker, by his family and friends. Dunn’s many years of commitment to his community included serving as a state legislator and as chair of USM Corporate Partners. The award is given in his memory to an accounting or business major who upholds some of his high ideals and who is involved in our community.
Burchard Dunn Memorial Scholarship Requirements:
- Only Sophomore, Junior, or Senior undergraduate Business Administration and Accounting & Finance majors may apply
- Cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or better required
- Exhibit financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office
- Enrolled for a minimum of 6 USM credits when funds are received
- Will graduate no sooner than December of the academic year funds are received
- Preference given to students who have contributed to the community
- Scholarship application and essay required
Charles N. Greene Scholarship
Family and friends of Charles N. Greene, in honor of his service as a professor of management and organizational behavior from 1986 to 1993, established this scholarship in 1994. The award is given to a business administration student with strong academic standing who has expressed an interest in a career in management.
Charles N. Green Scholarship Requirements:
- Only undergraduate Business Administration majors with 54 or more credits may apply
- Cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or better required
- Enrolled for a minimum of 6 USM credits when funds are received
- Will graduate no sooner than December of the academic year funds are received
- Received an A- or better in BUS 340 and interested in a career in management
- Scholarship application and essay required
Construction Financial Managers Association Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1996 by the CFMA and is awarded to an accounting major, recommended by the accounting faculty, who has strong academic ability and connections to the construction industry.
Dean John W. Bay Scholarship
In 2003, this scholarship was established in recognition of beloved colleague John Bay who retired from the School of Business after 38 years of dedicated service. John and Anne Bay have continued to fund this scholarship which recognizes students who exhibit leadership potential through high quality participation, on a volunteer basis, in University, School of Business, and/or community organizations.
Dean John W. Bay Scholarship Requirements:
- Open to any School of Business Major
- Cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or better required
- Enrolled for a minimum of 6 USM credits when funds are received
- Will graduate no sooner than December of the academic year funds are received
- Exhibits leadership potential through high quality participation, on a volunteer basis, in University, School of Business, and/or community organizations
- Scholarship application and essay required
Duane Wood Scholarship
This award honors Duane Wood, who served as dean of the School of Business from 1981 to 1986. The award is given to an outstanding business administration major who has exemplary academic achievement and has demonstrated a strong interest and involvement in recreational and/or fitness activities.
Duane Wood Scholarship Requirements:
- Only undergraduate Business Administration majors with 30 or more credits may apply
- Cumulative G.P.A. of 3.2 or better required
- Enrolled for a minimum of 6 USM credits when funds are received
- Will graduate no sooner than December of the academic year funds are received
- Interest and/or involvement in recreational/fitness activities
- Scholarship application and essay required
Electa "Lecky" McLain Brown Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Electa "Lecky" McLain Brown, a longtime resident of Gorham who worked at USM from 1943 (when it was the Gorham Normal School) until 1976. When she left the university, she had held the position of bursar for 33 years. This endowed scholarship is designed to help USM School of Business students with financial need meet the cost of tuition. Recipients of Electa McLain Brown Endowed Scholarships must be graduates of a Maine high school.
Electa "Lecky" McLain Brown Scholarhship Requirements:
- Open to any School of Business Major
- Cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or better required
- Enrolled for a minimum of 6 USM credits when funds are received
- Will graduate no sooner than December of the academic year funds are received
- Preference given to those with financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office
- Graduated from a Maine high school
- Scholarship application required
Elizabeth B. Woodwell Scholarship
This scholarship was established at USM in 2006 by the estate of Elizabeth B. Woodwell. Ms. Woodwell was an alumna of USM, Class of 1975. Recipients of Elizabeth B. Woodwell Scholarships must be Maine residents with financial need as determined by the USM Financial Aid Office.
Elizabeth B. Woodwell Scholarship Requirements:
- Open to any School of Business Major
- Enrolled for a minimum of 6 USM credits when funds are received
- Will graduate no sooner than December of the academic year funds are received
- Current Maine resident
- Exhibit financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office

George D. Woodward Accounting Scholarship
The Simmons Foundation established this scholarship in 1995, honoring George D. Woodward, who practiced as an accountant in Portland and taught at USM. The scholarship provides assistance to accounting majors who possess exceptional academic credentials with preference given to residents of Cumberland County.
George D. Woodward Accounting Scholarship Requirements:
- Only undergraduate Accounting majors may apply
- Cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or better required
- Enrolled for a minimum of 6 USM credits when funds are received
- Will graduate no sooner than December of the academic year funds are received
- Financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office
- Preference given to those who are permanent residents of Cumberland County
- Scholarship application and essay required
Howard F. Greene Scholarship Nomination
This prestigious scholarship is awarded annually by the New England state societies of CPAs. The award is based on academic achievement, written communication skills, involvement in extracurricular activity, and statement of career goals. The accounting faculty presents their nominee to the Maine Society of CPAs.
MEF Scholarship
All IMA student members who have not previously received an IMA Scholarship in the classification category to which they currently reside or from another IMA Scholarship Program are eligible to apply for the MEF-sponsored scholarships. Student applications are classified into undergaruate and graduate categories, and selected individuals will be awarded scholarships ranging in amount from $1,000 to $2,500. Application here.
Daniel L. Nickerson Memorial Scholarship
MacDonald Page Schatz Fletcher & Company established this scholarship in 2001. The award is given to a School of Business Accounting student entering their junior or senior year. The accounting faculty selects the recipient.
Mary Purkis and Horton P. Gilman Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1984 in memory of Mary Purkis Gilman. The scholarship was created by friends and family in recognition of her commitment to American business and to those individuals entering business as a career. In 1996, the scholarship was renamed to honor Horton Gilman as well, who was a faithful friend and loyal supporter of the School of Business. The recipient must embody the free enterprise spirit and have demonstrated involvement in extracurricular activity, work, or community service.
Mary Purkis and Horton P. Gilman Scholarship Requirements:
- Only undergraduate Business Administration majors with 83-115 credits may apply
- Cumulative G.P.A. of 3.2 or better required
- Enrolled for a minimum of 6 USM credits when funds are received
- Will graduate no sooner than December of the academic year funds are received
- Normally completes at least 12 credits per year
- Involved in extracurricular activities, work, or community activities
- Scholarship application and essay required
Owen C. Hall Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1980 honoring Owen C. Hall, who was a professor of accounting from 1957 to 1979, in recognition of his loyalty and outstanding service to USM. This award is given to an accounting major with superior ability and achievement that has demonstrated their potential for making significant contributions to the accounting profession. The accounting faculty nominates the recipient.
Portland Pipeline Corporation Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2000 by Portland Pipeline Corporation and is awarded to a business school major who has demonstrated strong academic achievement, high leadership skills, and participation in extracurricular activities.
Portland Pipeline Scholarship Requirements:
- Any School of Business major/class standing may apply
- Cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or better required
- Enrolled for a minimum of 6 USM credits when funds are received
- Will graduate no sooner than December of the academic year funds are received
- High leadership skills and involvement in extracurricular activities
- Scholarship application and essay required
Robert W. Berry Memorial Scholarship
Berry, Dunn, McNeil, & Parker established this scholarship in 2000 in memory of one of its founding partners, Robert W. Berry. The award is given to a student who is pursuing an interest in technology and business.
Robert W. Berry Memorial Scholarship Requirements:
- Any School of Business major/class standing may apply
- Cumulative G.P.A. of 2.5 or better required
- Enrolled for a minimum of 6 USM credits when funds are received
- Will graduate no sooner than December of the academic year funds are received

The School of Business Scholarship Fund Award
The School of Business Scholarship Fund Award is established from gifts dedicated to the School through the Annual Fund. This award is given annually to one or more junior or senior majors in the School of Business who have superior ability and achievement and who have demonstrated potential for making a significant contribution to their chosen field. School of Business faculty members nominate the recipient.
SCMS Scholarhsip
Completion of this application also entitles candidates to be considered to receive the prestigious Stuart Cameron and Margaret McLeod Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $5,000. One individual will be selected from the entire Scholarship Application pool to receive this award sponsored by the Stuart Cameron McLeod Society. The SCMS Scholarship winner will also receive lodging, transportation, and registration costs for the Annual Conference (in June) and the Student Conference (in November). After announcement of the wunner, the recipient wlil be required to participate in the parent chapter, at the council level, or the national level as a prerequisite to receive the monetary award. Wayne H. Bonoff Scholarship
This memorial scholarship was established to honor Wayne Bonoff, a 1994 USM School of Business graduate. Wayne Bonoff’s colleagues at AT&T, with his wife Ruth, began the Bonoff Scholarship Memorial Golf Tournament which continues to raise funds for this award. The award is given to a non-traditional student who did not enter college immediately after high school, or who has taken some time off between starting and completing his/her degree.
Wayne H. Bonoff Scholarship Requirements:
- Open to any School of Business Major
- Cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or better required
- Enrolled for a minimum of 6 USM credits when funds are received
- Will graduate no sooner than December of the academic year funds are received
- A non-traditional student: An older student, usually over the age of 24, who did not enter college immediately after high school or has taken some time off between starting and completing his/her degree

William G. McGowan Scholarship
The McGowan Scholars program recognizes the academic achievements and excellence of students pursuing a major offered by an accredited business school. It is designed to encourage leadership ability, interpersonal skills, and significant involvement in academic, campus, and community activities. It also recognizes excellence of character, a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurial potential.
William G. McGowan Scholarship Requirements:
- Only School of Business full-time junior or senior undergraduates and full-time School of Business graduate students may apply
- Cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or better required
- Enrolled for a minimum of 6 USM credits when funds are received
- Will graduate no sooner than December of the academic year funds are received
- Scholarship application and essays required

Wright Express LLC Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Wright Express to support the educational endeavors of USM School of Business students in pursuit of excellence through their chosen field of study. These awards recognize students who exemplify outstanding leadership, scholarship, and strength of character.

This award honors a senior in the School of Business for outstanding performance. The Business Administration department faculty selects an individual with high standards of excellence who has demonstrated potential for making a significant contribution in his/her field.
Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award
Initiated in 1948, the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award is a national recognition designed to honor students with high academic performance in undergraduate business programs. In order to spotlight the emerging future business leaders among our graduating seniors, the School of Business selects one student with a solid academic background who exhibits strong leadership qualities and is deserving of this prestigious honor.
