PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
Prior to joining the USM faculty in 1974, Professor Andrews was a member of the technical staff at Lucent Technologies (formerly Bell Laboratories) as well as the staff supervisor for operations analysis at NYNEX. At USM, he teaches courses on applied statistics, forecasting, management science, and quality management. He has also served as director of the MBA program and continues in his role as senior Research Associate and Co-Director of the Center for Business and Economic Research, which provides professional applied research and technical services to the public and private sectors. Over the last ten years, he has written research and training grants that have led to project awards totaling almost $2 million. Among the sources of these awards have been the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Maine Science and Technology Commission, the Center for Technology Transfer, the New Hampshire Housing Financing Authority, and most recently the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development, the Maine Technology Institute, and most recently, UnumProvident. Professor Andrews has served as a consultant to over fifty private-sector concerns, among them L.L. Bean, UNUM, Verizon, Digital Equipment Corporation, the American Automobile Association, Hannaford Brothers, IDEXX, Maine Medical Center, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield. He has published several articles involving quantitative analysis in such journals as Interfaces, The Credit and Financial Management Review, American Business Review, Economic Development Quarterly and the Journal of the American Water Works Association. He has presented papers on topics of management science before nationally known professional organizations. One of his consulting projects placed third before AT&T and IBM in the International Edelman Competition for the best management science project of the year.
