Congratulations, New USM Student!
Allow me to introduce you to the Russell Scholars Program, the most exciting learning community at USM. Russell scholars attend small classes together, taught by their own faculty, in addition to their regular major courses of study. During the junior year, Russell Scholars have an optional out-of-state or out-of-country learning experience, at little extra cost, for which they receive full credit. As a Russell Scholar you will work with your own faculty mentor, as well as with a team of guest mentors from inside and outside of the university who will provide you with individualized academic and professional support.
All first year Russell Scholars live in Woodward Hall, a coeducational residence hall centrally located on the beautiful Gorham campus. Russell Scholars classrooms and faculty offices are located here for your convenience. Above all, you can make friends quickly, readily meet with your professors, and feel at home in a small community within USM. According to a recent Russell Scholar, one advantage of the program is its “closeness of community with a large support group to assist academically.”
There are frequent gatherings of the Russell Scholars and their faculty for discussing ideas and student issues in a relaxed setting. Optional field trips, as well as special events in the arts, humanities, and sciences are regularly attended by the Russell Scholars and their guests.
Russell Scholars are recognized at graduation for having successfully completed a challenging course of study and for having made a contribution to USM and to Greater Portland. This accomplishment is recognized by educational, business, and cultural institutions throughout Maine and the region.
Regardless of your major, and if you have an average-to-excellent academic history, you may qualify to become a Russell Scholar. The most important membership requirements are that you (1) are admitted to USM as a full time student, (2) have a strong desire to succeed, and (3) have an enthusiasm for working with others. This is not an honors program--this is a success program. We are very proud that eighty-five percent of the first-year Russell Scholars return the following year to USM.
To reserve your spot as a candidate in the Russell Scholars Program, I encourage you to print, complete, and return the application form below. I shall look forward to hearing from you.
