Floor Hockey Rules
Team
There are five players from each team on the floor at once, four plus one
goalie. You must have at least three players to start a game.
Game
The game is divided up into three 12 minute running periods. There should be a
two minute rest between periods. The clock will stop for injuries and when
signaled by the officials. Each team gets one time out each period. If a tie
game results a five minute overtime will be played. If still tied after that,
then a five minute sudden death overtime will be played. If it is still tied
after that, penalty shots will be taken.
Start of the game
Play begins with a face-off in the center
Use of the Feet
1. Players may use their feet to block the ball/puck.
2. Feet MAY NOT be used to: kick the ball, advance the ball, pass the ball or
score.
Use of the Hands
1. Hands may only be used to knock the ball down. If caught, there will be a
face-off at point of catch.
2. Hands MAY NOT be used to pass the ball forward, cover, freeze, or swat the
ball towards the goal.
3. Anytime illegal use of hands or fee occurs a face-off will result at the
point closest to where the infraction occurred.
Goal
A goal is scored when the ball is shot past the goal line. The entire ball must
pass over the line. A goal MAY NOT be scored with the stick above the waist, or
with the hands or feet. A goal may be scored by the ball deflecting into the
goal off a body part unintentionally. If a defensive person shoots, kicks, or
throws the ball into their own net, the goal is awarded to the offensive team.
If the puck is kicked by an offensive player and it hits a defensive player and
then enters the net it is a goal.
Tie up of the Puck
Whenever a ball is tied up along the wall or slides under the curtain, a face-
off shall occur 10 feet from the point of the tie up.
Substitutions:
1. Changing on the fly is allowed however, if there are any more than five
players on the floor, a 1:00 penalty will occur. This will be served by any team
member.
2. Substitutions may also come on after a goal, a penalty call, a face-off or
dead ball.
Goalie:
1. The goalie may not throw, roll or pass the ball with the glove hand except
sideways and backwards.
2. The goalie may not throw their stick.
3. The goalie may not come more than ten feet away from the goal to smother
or freeze the ball.
4. The goalie may not go past the center floor line.
5. A team may only change its goalie between periods or due to injury.
6. A team may pull its goalie for the end of the game. The official must be
informed of this prior to it taking place.
7. A player may not be in the goalie's crease; seven feet in front of the
goal.
IMPORTANT RULES:
1. Checking is NOT permitted. This mean no intentional body contact of any
kind. There may be contact on the floor while playing the ball, but you must be
making an attempt to get the ball.
2. The stick may not be raised above the waist at any time!! No raising the
stick above the waist on the back swing or on the follow through.
Infractions and Penalties
A team that is called for the following penalties will lose possession of the
ball, and the opposing team will take over at the center line:
- Catching or carrying the ball
- Throwing the ball. No one can throw the ball, not even the goalie.
A 2 minute Penalty will be assessed for the following infractions:
Cross Checking: A check delivered by extending the arms with both hands on the
stick and making contact with the opponent above the waist.
Tripping: Placing the stick, foot, knee, hand, arm, or elbow in
such a manner that causes an opponent to trip or fall.
Slashing: Using the stick in a manner to strike an opponent.
Swearing: Using obscene gestures or audible profane language on
the floor, or anywhere in the facility, before, during and after the game.
High Sticking: Carrying the stick or bringing the stick above
the shoulders. No
Slap shots: when shooting or passing, the stick cannot be
raised above the waist.
Throwing the stick): No player, including the goalie, shall
hinder play by throwing a stick.
Hooking: Impeding the progress of an opponent by use of the
stick.
Falling on the puck/(ball: Deliberately falling on or gathering
the puck into the body.
Anyone ejected from a game will be suspended from their next scheduled game.
