USM School of Education Receives Bequest
Posted February 4, 2013
The University of Southern Maine School of Education and Human Development has received a $109,000 bequest from the estate of Shirley Usher Towle.
The funds will be used for scholarships and to support operations within the School of Education and Human Development.
Shirley Usher Towle, a native of Hollis, graduated from Hollis High School in 1943. In 1945 she graduated from Gorham Normal School, a USM predecessor institution. She taught school in West Buxton and Bar Mills until her marriage to Dr. David M. Towle in 1947. The couple then moved to Providence, R.I., and from there, to Acton, Mass., where they lived for many years.
