PSI CHI is
the National Honor Society in Psychology. The University of Southern
Maine local chapter offers the opportunity to join if you meet certain
standards required by PSI CHI and the Association of College Honor Societies.
HISTORY
PSI CHI was
founded in 1929 for the purpose of encouraging, stimulating, and
maintaining excellence in scholarship of the individual members in all
fields, while also advancing the science of psychology. Psi Chi is
affiliated with the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society.
BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP

to interact with other psychology students interested in similar
research or goals such as securing work in the field or applying to
graduate programs.
- An opportunity to become active in the USM Psychology Department.
- Members
who assume leadership roles will acquire valuable organizational skills
associated with the effective management of a student group.

collaborative forum is made available to members for promoting
research, receiving national and international recognition, as well as
meeting and interacting with leaders in their related fields via the
following:
- National and regional conventions and conferences held in conjunction with national psychological associations
- Research award competitions
- Certificate programs
- The quarterly Psi Chi Newsletter
MEMBERSHIP
Applications are accepted at the beginning of each Fall and Spring semester.
The only charge for lifetime membership is a one-time registration fee. Currently
exceeding a quarter-million members, many Psi Chi inductees have
achieved distinguished careers in psychology. USM students become
lifetime members of this nationally recognized organization by joining
our local chapter. The student officers and faculty advisor are
collaboratively responsible for registering inductees with the national
office.
MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA
- Completion of at least 4 courses in psychology.
- Major or minor standing in psychology.
- 3.0 overall GPA and 3.3 in psychology.
