Timothy Stevens

Senior Advisor to the President
Timothy Stevens comes to USM from The City University of New York (CUNY) where he was research and project development director in the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and University Provost. Formerly chair of the English Department and long-time faculty member at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Stevens has been the recipient of both NEH and Fulbright Fellowships. He has served on the executive committees of the MLA’s Netherlandic Discussion Group and the American Association of Netherlandic Scholars and is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English. In addition to his current work in higher education administration, policy, and strategic planning, his research interests include nineteenth-century Dutch literature, particularly the poetry of the Beweging van Tachtig (Movement of the Eighties) and the medieval animal epic Van den Vos Renaerde; Chaucer’s dream poems, fin de siècle Northern European literature, and the European cultural response to the Oscar Wilde trial.
From 1993-2002, he was one of the three co-editors of the scholarly journal Criminal Justice Ethics. His editorial work includes a number of books in the area of criminal justice studies, and in 2004 he edited the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops-commissioned John Jay study The Nature and Scope of the Problem of Sexual Abuse of Minors by Catholic Priests and Deacons in the United States.
Stevens served as secretary of John Jay College’s Faculty Senate and as a member of the University Faculty Senate.
He earned his B.A. and M.A. in English at the University of Texas at Austin and his Ph.D. at CUNY’s Graduate Center.
