The Maine Legislature in 1997 authorized each of the seven institutions within the University of Maine System to form its own advisory board to advocate for the institution, advise the president on community and campus needs, and review new programs and other proposals before they are submitted to the University of Maine System Board of Trustees. USM's Board of Visitors consists of members drawn from the business, legal, and educational communities of southern Maine.

The University of Southern Maine Alumni Association has more than 27,000 members representing alumni of its seven predecessor institutions (Gorham Normal School, Gorham State Teachers College, Portland Junior College, Portland University, University of Maine-Portland, Gorham State College, and the University of Maine at Portland-Gorham) and the graduates of the University of Southern Maine. There is no membership fee; students automatically become members upon graduation.

The Association also serves students and the University community. It provides leadership and facilitates the reciprocal relationship between the alumni body and the University in order to foster a sense of community within the alumni membership and to strengthen the University through alumni involvement.
