USM's MeMUNC students traveled to Pennsylvania during February break to participate in the Pennsylvania State University Model United Nations Conference (PUNC) which took place on February 21-24, 2013 in State College, PA.
During the conference, students participate in crisis committees and are assigned debate positions. USM's Mohamed Mohamed participated in a crisis committee for Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders (MSF). A crisis committee delegate receives new information while conducting the committee as opposed to having all of the information beforehand. There is very little time to prepare and a delegate's information must be precise.
For his work and his performance on this committee, Mohamed received the award for "Outstanding Delegate," which is the second highest award an individual can receive at PUNC. It requires that an individual remain in character and influence debate both through speeches and private actions (which is done through note passing to others and the crisis director/team). Moe was also head delegate for the USM team.
Last year, Mohamed was named crisis director, a position that required him to write and oversaw the crises committees. For MeMUNC, Moe is part of the African Union Dais team. This year, Moe will be facilitating student discussion by chairing/overseeing the committee. He is also the President of the International Relations Association.
Congratulations on a job well done!
The course is a great opportunity for USM students and for the general public to get direct access to the European Union institutions in Brussels and other international bodies in The Hague, such as the International Court of Justice for instance, as the best way to understand the complexity of international organizations. Participants will also be able to visit the main NATO headquarters in Brussels and attend presentations by NATO officials on current topics in the news with regards to foreign and military policy. Students will acquire a detailed knowledge of how the many bodies of the EU work together and how the EU itself has developed over time
