Teamsters - Police represented position

Employee performs skilled, complicated and confidential police work to protect life and property; enforces University regulations, as well as federal, state, and local laws; uses community policing procedures and performs duties in an analytical and objective fashion, without display or prejudice or discrimination; detects and apprehends violators. Work is accomplished within departmental procedures, but judgment and initiative are frequently exercised.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: must have successfully completed the 100-hour Law Enforcement Pre-Service Training Program and Alert Test.  No written exam.  Oral interviews, physical fitness assessment, medical exam, background investigation, job suitability assessment and polygraph exam required. Must be at least 21 years of age and possess a valid class C Maine driver’s license.

  • Short Term Disability Coverage:           Employee pays premiums.
  • Long Term Disability Coverage:           USM pays premiums.
  • Tuition Waiver  Employees can take two tuition-free courses every semester. (Employees pay for books and fees). Spouses and dependant children can take courses at half-tuition if they are full time students, carrying a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester.
  • Vacation Leave            Hours are earned and accumulate biweekly.

0      4 years   =          12 days annually

5      8 years   =          15 days annually

9   – 12 years   =          18 days annually

13 – 16 years   =          21 days annually

17    +  years    =          24 days annually

  • Holiday Leave              12 paid annually. If employee works a “family” holiday (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years), pay is double time and a half.
  • Sick Leave                   4.62 hours earned and accumulated biweekly = 15 days annually.
  • Bereavement Leave      Death in immediate family         -    5 days
  •                                     Funeral leave for Aunt or Uncle -    1 day
  • Retirement Plan            403(b) Investment Plan – Employees can manage their investment portfolios, or experts can do it for them. USM’s retirement plan does not interfere with the collection of a pension from the Maine State Retirement  System for those employees eligible through a previous law enforcement career.
