Prior Learning Assessment
Portfolio Assessment
Academic portfolios are formal, written communications which include supporting documentation of college-level knowledge, competency, and ability for full credit. Documentation needs to prove understanding and competence in the subject matter covered by the particular course and may require some form of demonstration or performance in addition to the written portion. The portfolio is submitted to the PLA office by the student, who formally requests undergraduate academic credit for their extra-collegiate learning.
Students may request general elective credit or elective credit within a department for course equivalency. Elective credits may be earned regardless of one's academic major, but their applicability for meeting graduation requirements varies by school/college.
Those interested in proceeding with the portfolio option need to register with the Office for Prior Learning Assessment before beginning the process.
