Prior Learning Assessment

International Baccalaureate

New to the Office for Prior Learning in 2008!

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is an academic process, culminating in tests, originating on the secondary level (high school). IB markets itself as "quality education for a better world." Its mission is as follows:

The International Baccalaureate (IB) aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

The University of Southern Maine recognizes IB and is committed to supporting students who have achieved excellence in the IB program. Faculty will evaluate exams from the Higher Level which may lead to college credit.

Notify the IB Organization to have the official score transcripts sent to the University of Southern Maine, Office for Prior Learning Assessment, 249 Luther Bonney Hall, 96 Falmouth Street, Portland, Maine 04104-9300. Higher Level examinations need a score of 5 or better. The University does not grant credit for Standard Level IB Examinations.
