Faculty

About the Department
The Physics Department of the University of Southern Maine consists of four full time faculty together with several research laboratories. Faculty here study stellar spectroscopy, Brillouin light scattering, physics of granular materials, computational physics, and asteroid dynamics.
The department grants a Bachelor of Arts in Physics degree, as well as the ability to minor in physics. Requirements for the major and minor are found in the University Catalog on this page.http://www.usm.maine.edu/catalogs/undergraduate/index.htmhttp://www.usm.maine.edu/catalogs/undergraduate0607/pdfs/physics.pdf#nameddest=physicsshapeimage_8_link_0shapeimage_8_link_1

Course Offerings, Descriptions, & Prerequisites

Computing tools for Physics Majors

The physics department has a course use license for an excellent scientific graphing program: Igor Pro 6 by Wavemetrics.  Igor Pro is an extremely powerful and fast program for data analysis, and our license lets you install a copy on your home  computer or laptop as long as you are taking a physics course. It is worth learning. Contact Prof. Nakroshis for more info.

In addition, several upper level courses require you to learn the scientific typesetting program LaTEX; if you go on to graduate school, you will definitely need to use this tool. It is a free (and large!) download, and is available for all platforms. If you are going to do any writing that involves mathematics, this is the program to use.
