In the Community: USM’s Veterans Community

Posted January 24, 2013

student soldierThe Veterans Resource Center (VRC) located in the Woodbury Campus Center, is a center to support USM students who are veterans and dependents of veterans as they transition from military life to college. Staffed by VA work-study students, the VRC provides a safe environment to connect with other veterans as well as get information about support services and resources to be successful at USM.

If you are looking to join a student organization, the Veteran Student Organization (VSO) is housed inside the Veterans Resource Center. The VSO is a student organization for students who are veterans, dependents of veterans, or even non-veterans. The VSO supports the collaboration of student veterans and non-veterans in order to make USM a more inclusive environment. The VSO sponsors events to help raise money to support our troops overseas. The first project of the year is to raise money and collect donations in order to send care packages to a sponsoring unit in Afghanistan.

The first meeting of the VSO will be on January 23rd at 3pm in the VRC.
Hope to see you there!

Also, every month the Veterans Resource Center sends out a newsletter with a lot of helpful information; including tips from the School Certifying Official (SCO), Carolyn Cutting; advice from the VSO faculty advisor, Dr. Robert Sanford; wellness tips from the Counseling Center; VSO updates; a monthly calendar of upcoming events; and much more!
