  • Spring 2013 will be the final offering of this certificate program

New! USM Certificate Program in Foundations of Holistic Health
USM School of Nursing is now offering an undergraduate certificate program in foundations of holistic health. This is open to both USM students and the general community (non-matriculated students). Learn more.

Details:

This professional development certificate program in holistic health care practice offers practitioners expanded knowledge in a rapidly growing field and an opportunity to develop more meaningful work and increased self-awareness for healing. Consumers and professional caregivers are embracing more holistic approaches to wellness. Over 36% of American adults are using some type of complementary or alternative medicine (CAM) to supplement conventional health care.

Holistic health care practice honors both conventional and complementary medicine. It is interdisciplinary in nature and relevant and enriching to the entire range of professionals providing care for physical, mental, and emotional health. In holistic health care, mind, body, spirit, and environment are seen as interconnected and essential to both personal well-being and to healing others. A holistic approach recognizes that practitioners who have a firm foundation of balance and wellness in their own lives are more able to effectively provide healing and health care to others.

Program Requirements:

This program is designed for a wide range of credentialed health and human services professionals, including nurses, therapists, social workers, counselors, allied health care practitioners and complementary health care providers. A copy of your license or credential must be submitted to receive a certificate.

Please note: Individuals may enroll and participate in all program courses without having or providing evidence of licensure or credentials. However, evidence of licensure or credentials is required for official program completion and accompanying certificate.

For all providers/practitioners, this program provides a foundation for developing a holistic and integrative practice, information on how to make appropriate CAM referrals, and an opportunity to examine various evidence-based complementary practices and methods of healing that can enhance clinical outcomes while creating satisfying and meaningful professional caregiving experiences.

Registered nurses will be able to expand their knowledge of the standards of holistic nursing practice and meet the pre-requisite 48 hours of approved continuing education in order to apply for board certification in holistic nursing. For detailed information about board certification in holistic nursing visit www.ahncc.org.

When completed, your USM Professional and Continuing Education Certificate in Holistic Health Care Practice offers verification that you have a knowledgeable foundation in holistic health care practice and integrative care. Prior graduates of this program have used their certificate to introduce complementary therapies or integrative programs in various institutions or become a valuable resource for patients and staff. Other graduates have expanded their current practice to include holistic principles of care to enhance patient care or to enrich their own self-healing.

This certificate program is composed of a 24-hour required course and 24 hours of electives in complementary health and healing modalities. The full 48 hours required for the certificate may be earned over several semesters.
