The purpose of this course is to build and deepen participants’ knowledge and practices related to comprehension instruction. The content is based on scientifically based reading research and national initiatives related to reading instruction. The course will emphasize learning as an active, constructive process and promote using a variety of learning strategies to enhance understanding. Course content will include an overview of current comprehension research and implications for instruction. Major emphasis will be given to helping students extend their thinking, self-monitor for understanding, and unpack difficult text. Participants will have an opportunity to reflect upon their own reading strategies, learn ways to help students comprehend difficult text, and design lessons that implement the Gradual Release of Responsibility model.
