This course will teach counselors to use various brief counseling techniques. The main focus will be on cognitive-behavioral approaches (i.e., Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, solution-focused brief therapy, narrative therapy, and Aaron Beck’s cognitive techniques). Applications of techniques to adults will be primary. However, application to children and families will be discussed. Cognitive-behavioral counseling is the most heavily researched form of psychotherapy and has proven effective in the treatment of various psychological problems. The cognitive-behavioral approach maintains that one’s thoughts ultimately determine how one feels and behaves. This approach typically requires only a few sessions and is, therefore, a centerpiece of the “brief counseling” repertoire.
