This course is designed for school guidance counselors and social workers, therapists, and others who work in a supportive setting with teenagers. In this course participants will explore theories of the complex factors of teen suicide including but not limited to: isolation, brain chemistry, medications; learn skills to reinforce the protective factors against suicide –deep listening, safe expression of feelings, self care, building supportive communities, spirituality; hear from survivors – parents, friends, siblings, and children about their experience; hear from school and community personnel about ways schools and communities can support teens before and after a suicide loss; become familiar with a variety of resources on teen suicide including – books, web resources, community support groups; and discover how their personal experience and wisdom can impact and enhance their work with teens. The course will be a balance of lecture, group discussion and sharing, and hands on activities. Time will be allotted for processing the feelings that this material may bring up.
