Creative Literacy through the Arts will be an exploration of The Performance Cycle, a curriculum framework developed in the Education Department at Brown University. Students will be led through an experiential process that promotes deep comprehension and other literacy skills through the integration of theatre and visual art strategies. Using a backwards planning model, students will create an arts/literacy curriculum designed to meet the Maine Learning Results for their own grade and content area. A core literary text will serve as the center of our performance cycle experience, and several articles on arts integration theory will be read and discussed in class. Students will find the learning strategies of the class to be transferable to all grades and subject matter. Information on the Performance Cycle can be found at www.artslit.org.
