This graduate course, developed by the University of Southern Maine’s Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence and Lewiston-Auburn College, is designed for school administrators, teachers, and other educational leaders in pre-K through 12 schools. The main purposes of this course are: to explore the problems and dynamics of youth violence, bias, bullying, and harassment; to investigate the problems of pedagogical and curricular practices that exclude, silence, and/or deny access; to analyze a variety of programs and approaches to address these problems; to examine the role of leadership in creating safe, respectful, and productive learning communities and schools; to create inclusive curricula and learning environments. This course provides an opportunity to view schools and classrooms in light of democratic aims and basic human rights. It also provides opportunities for critical examination and dialogue about promising practices for educational leaders in preventing forms of violence and exclusion in schools and classrooms.
