This course is designed to give participants an overview of chemical dependency. Physiological and psychological addiction will be examined. Key concepts related to theoretical models of understanding and treating individuals with chemical dependency will be reviewed, particularly as these relate to adolescents and their families. The concept of comorbidity and the interface between substances and psychopathology will be examined. Additionally, substance use is examined as it relates to issues of diversity. Students will be expected to review and examine how substances have affected their lives and the lives of family and friends. (This course will be held at Future Builders School, Raymond, Maine)
