College of Education and Human Development The USM College of Education and Human Development traces its roots to 1878 when the State of Maine established the Western Maine Normal School, here in Gorham. During the 20th century, the Normal School slowly matured from a two-year seminary for young men and women studying to become teachers to the complex mix of graduate programs it is today. For more than 100 years, the College has built a foundation of knowledge and experience unequalled by other southern Maine colleges and universities. This maturity ensures stable and comprehensive programs that are always delivered by professionals.
Our students benefit enormously from this significant history. We are home to more than 1,000 full and part-time students, most of whom are engaged in graduate-level studies. We are USM's largest graduate program, accounting for nearly half of all graduate students at the University.
