WORKSHOP SERIES OVERVIEW

This workshop series is designed for K-12 educators, including teachers, administrators, and literacy specialists. Participants will gain an understanding of the Common Core State Standards, explore resources to use with them and tools for readiness, identify challenges, and learn strategies for instruction focusing on the Language, Reading, Writing, and Speaking and Listening standards. Phase level groups will work on common threads in the standards.

The series can be taken as a single, full-day workshop (February 1) or as a series (February 1, 29, March 19, April 25).

Full-Day Workshop
February 1, 2012 9:00 am - 3:30 pm
USM Portland Campus

THE COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS 
9:00 am - 12:00 noon 

The morning session of this full-day workshop will allow participants to develop a better understanding of the Common Core State Standards and identify challenges. Participants  will explore:
• the structure and key elements of the Common Core Standards
|• an overview of the resources available
• readiness and action planning tools for determining local strengths and gaps
• strategies for instruction

Participants will have the opportunity to network within and across districts to develop an action plan for use to implement the standards in their district.

THE LANGUAGE STANDARDS
1:00 - 3:00 pm 

Participants will be actively engaged in activities that illustrate and make connections to the standard. Participants will also explore resources and tools to use with the standard. There will be grade span groups.

DISTRICT TEAM TIME
3:00 - 3:30 pm 

School district teams will meet to debrief and continue their district planning.

Extended Workshop Series
February 29, March 19, April 25, 2012
3:30 - 6:30 pm
USM Portland Campus

Each after-school session will explore a different thread (Reading, Writing, and Speaking and Listening) in the Common Core State Standards. Participants will be actively engaged in activities that illustrate and make connections to that sessions specific standard. Participants will also explore resources and tools to use with the standard. There will be grade span groups.
