Register with OSSD
The accommodation procedure is interactive process between the student, the faculty member, and OSSD. Accommodations are requested on a semester-by-semester basis to reflect the specific nature of the course and the changing needs of the student.
A student who wishes to be considered for reasonable accommodations must follow the procedure outlined below.
Registration Procedure
-
Using University disability documentation guidelines, the student provides current, appropriate documentation of disability and accommodation need from a qualified medical or other licensed professional evaluator. (Documentation Guidelines)
-
The Office of Support for Students with Disabilities reviews the documentation to determine if it meets university guidelines. If additional information or clarification is needed OSSD will contact the student and/or the appropriate health care provider.
-
The OSSD carefully reviews the documentation to determine if the student qualifies as a person with a disability under the ADA and/or Rehabilitation Act and eligible to receive services.
-
After it is determined that the student does qualify and is eligible to receive services the OSSD will notify the student and advise the student to schedule an intake appointment with the Director of OSSD or Learning Disability Specialist. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss accommodations, procedures for implementing the accommodations and the student’s rights and responsibilities.
-
If the implementation of an approved accommodation requires the faculty’s involvement, a “Verification of Accommodation Letter” will be written confirming the student’s eligibility for the specific accommodations but will not include information about the student’s disabling condition.
-
Unless otherwise arranged, the “Verification of Accommodation Letter” will be held at OSSD for the student to pick up and deliver to his/her professors. The student and instructor meet and discuss the coordination of the accommodation. In some instances, letters will be mailed to professors, but this is the exception and needs to be discussed with the Director or Learning Disability Specialist.
-
If a faculty member has questions about the appropriateness of certain accommodations, he or she is advised to contact OSSD for further clarification.
-
If the student is not receiving the authorized accommodation, it is the student’s responsibility to report the failure to provide to OSSD for further action.
-
Each semester in which accommodations are needed, the student completes an Accommodation Request Form (also available at OSSD). If the student is requesting accommodations not supported by previously submitted documentation, additional documentation may be required.
- The requests will be reviewed by the Director and/or Learning Disability Specialist, who will contact the student if additional information is needed prior to approval of accommodations or if an accommodation is denied.
Accommodations can be requested at any time during the semester but are not applied retroactively.
