HAZARD CONTROL USING JSA’S

“JAS” – Job Safety Analysis

Hazard -         is any existing or potential condition in the workplace by itself or by              interacting with other variables can result in the unwanted effects of death,           injuries, property damage, and other losses.

The definition carries with it two significant points:

1.         A condition (situation) does have to exist at the moment to be classified a hazard.

2.         Hazards may result not from independent failure of workplace components but      from one workplace component acting upon or influencing another.

            Example:   Gasoline and sulfuric acid.

Hazard Analysis

Systematic approach (process) for identifying hazards and putting forth recommendations for corrective action.

Preliminary Hazard Analysis

A survey conducted to identify potential hazards and prioritize them according to:

1.         The likelihood of an accident or injury being caused by the hazard.

2.         The severity of injury that could result.

Components (Steps) of JSA

·                                 Identifying the tasks of a specific job.

·                                 Identifying associated hazards of the task.

·                                 Doing a risk assessment of each hazard.

·                                 Identifying specific control measures for each.
