The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a standing committee
comprised of
professors, physicians, and community members
who ensure that research
involving human participants is
well planned and ethical.
Important!
The only legally authorized entity at USM that can determine what is or is not research (as defined in 45 CFR 46), for purposes of regulatory compliance and human subjects protection, is the ORC/IRB. No other person, group, department, etc. has the legal authority to make such a determination.
