A Successful Partnership for Research:
California State University, Channel Islands' 2011 Survey of OLLI Members
Conducted by Sociology Students
Dennis J. Downey, Sociology Program, California State University Channel Islands
Annie Betterley, Master of Social Work Program, California State University Northridge
Marty Kaplan, OLLI, California State University Channel Islands

In the spring of 2011, a group of Sociology students at California State University, Channel Islands (CSUCI) partnered with CSUCI’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) to conduct a survey of OLLI members’ satisfaction and needs. We also surveyed former members to assess the reasons they no longer belong to OLLI, and to invite them to return. This represents a model for service-learning partnerships and community-based research. In our report, we present the project’s origins, describe stages of the research collaboration, and review key findings. Our central purpose is to convey the nature and benefits of such partnerships in order to encourage and promote similar partnerships at other universities. To that end, we provide a series of lessons and recommendations that contributed to the success of our partnership.
Full descriptions of the purposes, construction, and outcome of the survey can be found in the report.
